Das Projekt “Anti*Colonial Fantasies / Decolonial Strategies” versammelt Künstler*innen verschiedener Diasporas, Studierende und Lehrende der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wiens, die sich mit der Kritik und den Konsequenzen des Kolonialismus (insbesondere an der Hochschule) auseinandersetzen sowie am Entwurf und der Verwirklichung einer anderen Realität arbeiten. Als seltene Gelegenheit, schafft das Projekt somit einen Raum zur Vernetzung und Stärkung der schwarzen und people of color community Wiens.
Kuratiert von Sunanda Mesquita, Sophie Utikal und Imayna Caceres und umfasst das Projekt eine Kunstausstellung, einen Schreib- und Aktivismusworkshop, mehrere Perfomances sowie Vorträge von dekolonialen Denker*innen. Die Ausstellung findet im Friday EXIT statt und zeigt Arbeiten von Cana Bilir-Meier, Belinda Kazeem-Kaminski, Amoako Boafo, Sandra Monterroso, Imayna Caceres, Gerardo Montes de Oca, Rini Mitra, Ezgi Erol, Hansel Sato, Sunanda Mesquita, Verena Melgarejo-Weinandt, Naomi Rincon, Firas Shehadeh, Pedrâ Costa & Eduardo Triviño Cely, Stephanie Misa, Mariel Rodriguez, Tatiana Nascimento Dos Santos and Sophie Utikal.
Mit einem multimedialen Ansatz – Performance, Video, Installation, Malerei, Fotografie, Zeichnung und Text – als auch mit partizipativen Formaten zeigen die Künstler*innen der Ausstellung, welche Auswirkungen der kolonialen Vergangenheit noch bis heute existieren und erzählen von ihren Fantasien, wie diese gebrochen und überwunden werden können. Während Fragen zu Race, Gender, Spiritualität, Sexualität, Raum und Zeit gestellt werden, setzen die Künstler*innen am eigenen Körper an und führen von dort aus verschiedene Formen des Widerstands, der Gesellschaftskritik und Wissensproduktion weiter.
Mit Veranstaltungen, wie einem Workshop von Darkmatter (“The revolution will not
have a bibliography: student activism in the corporate university”), einem Schreibworkshop von Tatiana Nascimento Dos Santos (“Reth/inking futures: fiction writing & storytelling by/for Black and people of color”) und einem Seminar von Yuderkys Espinosa (Decolonial Feminism), wird das Projekt gleichzeitig zum Ort einer kreativen dekolonialen Praxis und eines kritischen Dialogs.
Die Eröffnung findet am 20. Mai im Friday EXIT (Döblergasse 2 /16 EG 1070) statt und umfasst neben der Ausstellung zwei Performances. Das vielfältige und dichte Programm bietet am 23. Mai ein Gespräch mit den Künstler*innen und Kuratorinnen an und endet am 28. Mai mit einer Performance von Pedra Costa & Eduardo Triviño und einem Vortrag von Daniela Ortiz zu “The Culture of Coloniality”.

The project “Anti*Colonial Fantasies / Decolonial Strategies” brings together artists from different diasporas, students and lecturers of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, who occupy themselves with a critique of the consequences of colonialism (with a special focus on Academia) and the imagination and possibility of alternative realities. Not a frequently given opportunity, this project allows for connecting and empowering the black and people of color community in Vienna.
Curated by Imayna Caceres, Sunanda Mesquita, and Sophie Utikal, the project includes an exhibition as well as a writing workshop, various performances, and talks by decolonial thinkers. The exhibition at Friday EXIT displays the works of Cana Bilir-Meier, Belinda Kazeem-Kaminski, Amoako Boafo, Sandra Monterroso, Imayna Caceres, Gerardo Montes de Oca, Rini Mitra, Ezgi Erol, Hansel Sato, Sunanda Mesquita, Verena Melgarejo-Weinandt, Naomi Rincon, Firas Shehadeh, Pedrâ Costa & Eduardo Triviño Cely, Stephanie Misa, Mariel Rodriguez, Tatiana Nascimento Dos Santos and Sophie Utikal.
Working on various mediums – performances, video, installation, painting, photographs, drawing, and writing – as well as participatory formats, the artists expose the ways in which coloniality persists today and their fantasies to break from it. Raising questions of race, sexuality, gender, spirituality, space, and time, these artists engage from the site of the bodies, and depart from diverse forms of resistance, social critique and knowledge production.
With a workshop from the trans south asian performance artists Darkmatter (“The revolution will not have a bibliography: student activism in the corporate university”), a writing workshop by Tatiana Nascimento Dos Santos (“Reth/inking futures: fiction writing & storytelling by/for Black and people of color”), or a seminar at VBKÖ by Yuderkys Espinosa (Ethnocentrism and coloniality in Latin American feminisms: the complicity and consolidation of hegemonic feminists in transnational spaces), the project is both a site of creative decolonial strategies and of critical dialogues.
Opening on the 20th of May (Friday EXIT, Döblergasse 2 /16 EG 1070) with two different performances, the program of the project is full of different events and talks that go until the 28th of May, where the project finalizes with a performance by Pedra Costa & Eduardo Triviño and a talk by Daniela Ortiz on the Culture of Coloniality.
